Thomas
Mann Baynes (1876-1951) was a German-American writer, translator, and publisher. He is best known for his translations of the works of German author Thomas Mann, for which he was awarded the National Book Award for Translation in 1950. Baynes was born in Munich, Germany and educated at the University of Munich, where he studied philosophy, history, and economics

. After graduating in 1898, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing. In addition to his work as a translator, Baynes was also an editor and bookseller. He founded the publishing firm Thomas Mann Baynes, which specialized in the works of German authors, such as Thomas Mann. He also edited and published the works of German authors such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Hermann Hesse. Baynes translations of Thomas Manns works are widely admired, and his translations of The Magic Mountain and Buddenbrooks remain classics

. He also translated works by such authors as Franz Kafka and Sigmund Freud. His translations of German poetry and prose have been described asmeticulous and lyrical, and his work was praised by such authors as T. S. Eliot,
