Willem-Velde Elder is a Dutch sculptor, printmaker and installation artist who lives and works in Amsterdam. He is known for his large-scale, often minimalist sculptures that incorporate elements of nature and everyday objects. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Stedelijk Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, all in Amsterdam.
Elder was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 1960. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1981-1985 and then completed a post-graduate course in Printmaking at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam from 1986-1987.
Elder's work has been influenced by a variety of sources. He has been inspired by Dutch modernist sculptors such as Carel Visser and Gerrit Rietveld, as well as by contemporary installation artists such as Rebecca Horn and Richard Serra. His works often incorporate elements of nature, such as branches, leaves and stones, as well as everyday objects, such as bottles and chairs.
